Some time back, I had this wonderful opportunity of listening to a spoken word on prayer. So moved was I had that today, I decide to pass on the message to you guys.
Many a times in life, we encounter situations that more often than not force us to confront our inner beings as to whether GOD answers prayers or not. It could be the image of that hungry, feeble child in flood-stricken India. Or it could be a friend or relative that recently succumbed to death at the mercies of a deadly scourge despite your ceaseless prayers. It could be the sight of blind beggars in towns and cities, or…The list is endless, but the conclusion the same: DOES GOD REALLY ANSWER PRAYERS? The person who blessed me with the message believed that God does answer our prayers. So do I. In my short lifetime, I have been a great witness of His miracles not only in my life, but also in the lives of countless others. I know of a household that was once about to sleep hungry, yet due to the mother’s faith and prayer, God answered them that very evening! After they had given thanks for a virtual meal, can you believe that a well-off neighbor knocked on their door with some food, saying that she had prepared it for her husband who had been returning from a journey, but upon his arrival, he had declined the meal, saying that that had been no way to welcome home a loving husband! And so, in an amazing twist of events, someone’s idea of a ‘not-so-good’ meal became a blessing to a household on the verge of hunger!
You see, God uses different means, resources and ways to answer our prayers. Sadly enough, up to date, we by far remain the most unused of God’s resources. I like viewing our requests and God’s responses as a triangle. At the one end is our prayer needs. At the top apex is God, who inspires in someone else the zeal to respond to our prayer needs. When you, for instance, pray for a nice phone, God inspires some degree of empathy in your parents or guardians, who then understand your reasons (of course good) for the phone and even go ahead to buy you one. When we pray for peace in our country, it is God who convicts Kenyans and makes them love peace and see its need in their daily lives. You get? He does not come to us in human form with gift boxes containing the answers to our prayers. He uses us to respond to us! Isn’t that amazing?
And so, the big question should not be ‘DOES GOD ANSWER PRAYERS?’ The question in mind should be, ‘HAVE I RESPONDED TO GOD’S CALL TO BE THE LIGHT IN SOMEONE’S DARKNESS?’ Have I been that much-longed-for ray of hope in someone’s despair? Have I put a smile on that sad face? Have I spoken life to that broken heart somewhere?
You see brethren, it is only when we begin asking ourselves such questions (and of course answer them) that we will properly begin to understand God’s will in our lives as far as prayer is concerned. The bible is clear that when we ask, we shall receive; when we seek we shall find and when we knock the door shall be opened unto us. But remember, WE HAVE A PART TO PLAY.
Shalom.
